I shouldn't read thought provoking material before I go to sleep. I've got a book of Father Hans called 'Words of Passage' which he wrote after his last walk to Compostela from Holland. It is entertaining, funny, and with deep philosophy behind much of it. But I'm enjoying it, despite it keeping me awake !
We have a Catholic mass each morning in the little chapel downstairs; and as the fathers are so generous and welcoming, I get up at 6.15 to attend it, and they often ask me to read the lesson … me ! An Anglican ! Reading in a Catholic church ! Wow ! This morning when I went into the chapel I noticed a tiny gecko on the wall by the crucifix … it slid behind it, where it is safe from the bigger gecko's who might find it tasty !
There are several gecko's in and outside my bedroom on the veranda; they appear after dark, pale almost transparent bodies flattened against the ceiling and the walls. I hope they are eating the mosquito's !
I've been very frustrated this morning. I wanted to go into town in with Morris in his tuk-tuk, but the telephone network is 'temporarily unavailable, please try later'. I think I know why … there were many police outside, stopping cars, and then a whole cavalcade of cars swept past and into the Nyanza Club which is in the road opposite. We think it is Raila Odinga (Kenya's prime minister) and the president of Uganda, who is here to open a new university. The telephone service may resume normally when they leave town. Because of this, I can't contact MamaPat to go and see her, which means I may not be able to before I leave. Time is getting short.
Later ... I discover my phone is out of ‘top up’ ... so as I’m uploading blogs here at the cyber cafe, I’ve put 1,000 KSh on my phone. (That's about 8 pounds UK)
