An email from my Thailand friend has located Piccadilly (see entry/photo for 2nd Feb). He said: "Piccadilly was in the (mid-thirties) Kakamega goldfield. I should think that sign became firewood decades ago!"

I think mining Kenyan gold was a short lived project; there proved to be a lot less gold than had been hoped. I remember on one trip we made into dry bush country in that area, maybe it was near the Cherangani's - where we stopped with the children by a river and panned for gold ! We found one or two specks, each about the size of a full stop !
Maybe I'll find time to take a bus trip to Kakamega and have a look around the town again. It's only a couple of hours from Kisumu.
