They are called 'Ng'wen' by the Luo, and 'Tsiswa' by the Luhya people around Lake Victoria.
But climate change and different farming practices mean there are less of the 'white' ants or termites to fly in colder weather. The local people collect them as the insects drop their wings. They become a delicious addition to the diet when cooked in hot cooking oil !
It used to be possible for local people to collect several sackfuls of the dried insects, to store or sell in the local markets, but not nowadays.
