A friend of mine suggested I check YouTube to see if I can find spoken Dholuo ... and these are four I have found so far.
A compilation of rather dated colonial pictures of (mostly) Luo people, but with a few familiar faces, including Jomo Kenyatta ... and even Barack Obama ... whose Luo grandfather worked at a neighbouring school to the one where I lived. I may even have met him !
This one has a rather loud woman singing Luo ... and shows the traditional pots used by the Luo. She is singing too fast for me to catch more than the odd word or two !
This is better ! I can follow some of this; a woman is describing what she keeps in her large clay pots !
And this one is my favourite so far ! It shows you the inside of a Luo house and the womens face is so typical ! I feel homesick ... !! They are singing the praises of an ancestor. The Luo usually (at least they did until recently as far as I know) bury their dead in the (rural) village where they live ... and a 'village' isn't anything like an English village ! A better word would be 'home' for a family lives in a compound of several small houses or huts, one for the father, one for the mother(s) and several for the older children. Nowadays things can be different, especially in the towns.
I must continue to explore YouTube ... and I'll certainly listen to the last three of these several more times.
