The Mountains of Kong .... again !!

I was throwing out the newspapers from the last week, and look what I found !   I'd been too busy to read through them properly, and just did the crosswords.

The Mountains of Kong !!

(Regular readers of my blog will recall I was fascinated by this mysterious ... and probably imaginary ... range of west African mountains, south of the Sahara.   Goodness, I see it was over a year ago !)

The article in the Telegraph magazine is actually about old maps, or even maps of imaginery places.    I love old maps, whether they be of the UK or Africa, or Wainwrights guides to the Lake District fells.  Sandi Toksvig writes part of the article, wherein she says:   "How about the non-existent Mountains of Kong, which were falsely created when Major James Rennell charted them on a map in 1798 and that survived for almost a century ?  Based on reports by explorers, he believed that such a chain of mountains could explain the watershed between the Niger basin and the Gulf of Guinea.  In fact, he believed it so much that he invented them."

Fascinating stuff !
