'Old Africa' for December 2020 and January 2021 has arrived ...
... and among the reviews, I saw one for a book called 'Peacocks and Picathartes'. I knew that peafowl occurred in India, and that one species also occurred in central Africa. Picathartes was a species of bird I had first heard of many years ago on a David Attenborough TV programme .... which it had taken him over 25 years to see in the wild ! How could I possibly resist this book ?!
The other book, 'Home Going' I had heard reviewed on the BBC World Service one night when I couldn't sleep .... it is two parallel stories of sisters beginning in Ghana .... one sold into slavery, the other a slave trader's wife. It follows their descendents in the Gold Coast and on to Mississippi over two hundred years. It came two days ago, and am already half way through it !
Another book I ordered at the same time has yet to come ... 'Kenya Kaleidoscope' ....
